Three things that I know about the achievement Gap--- Chuck Braak
1). The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 focused on closing the achievement gaps of various student groups and provided much needed information on the different subgroups of students.
2). Research has shown that dropout rates tend to be higher for children who live in poverty. According to the US Department of Education 2011 Conditions of Education Report, about 68% of 12th graders in high poverty schools graduated with a high school diploma in 2008 compared to 91% of 12th graders in low poverty schools.
3). A study by the Annie Casey Foundation, found that children who both live in poverty and read below grade level by 3rd grade are three times more likely to not graduate from high school compared to students that have never been in poverty.

1) African American students all over Nebraska, and more specifically in my school district score lower than White students on standardized tests that measure reading and math comprehension.
2) The goal of No Child Left behind was to work on closing the achievement gap between whites and minorities in the United States, which has not had the desired impact.
3) The strides being made at Miller Park Elementary School are amazing. Those teachers used the data and tools provided and it made a huge difference in their students scores. From this article, I learned the importance of data review to promote growth within each student.

- Head Start, Title I and Affirmative Action were all enacted by Congress to help combat differences in test scores brought on by poverty and low-income situations, however a significant gap still exists.
- While small victories are being gained here and there in closing the achievement gap in Nebraska, there is still a significant difference between the scores of black students and white students in the majority of areas.

- Achievement gap refers to a group of poor minority students who scores lower on student achievement measures than middle-class non-minority students do.
- Besides student’s socioeconomic status, cultural environment, and family background, school related factors,such as student attitude, school atmosphere, teacher expectations, and prejudice/racism are the causes of the achievement gap.
- Building relationships of mutual respect with students helps to close the gap.

- 1. The achievement gap is mainly different between students of color. Black and Hispanics seem to be the main victims of this problem.

- The achievement gap can be attributed to SES differences, as well as ethnicities.
- The environment of the student can have a huge effect on future achievement, even before their school years begin.
- Quality of instruction and the high expectations of the teacher in concert with parent involvement have been the most successful in closing the achievement gap.
- A 4th "Bonus" Item to THE list: NCLB was geared toward closing the achievement gap, however it was predicted in 2011 that 82% would be labeled as "failing". The number wasn't quite that high. However, the NEA estimates that between 75% and 99% of schools in every state will, eventually, be labeled as failing according the NCLB's measurement of AYP.
